L1-03 META narrative of the bible

INTRODUCTION

Our mission is Introducing kids to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith. In order to introduce young people to Jesus we have to know him well…and continue growing in our understanding of him. To do that we have to dig deeper into Scripture, as that is a key way that God reveals more of Himself to us. The second value of the Young Life mission is that we act under the authority of scripture and rely on the Holy Spirit to empower our ministry. To do that we must continue to deepen our understand of scripture.

Evidence of staff demonstrating this objective looks like:
  • Able to articulate the overall structure and composition of the bible
  • Demonstrates a familiarity with all the books of the bible
  • Demonstrates and ongoing desire to learn and dive deeper into scripture
  • Can communicate the overall Biblical narrative and the connection among the books to share the story of redemption
Take some time to watch the following videos and consider these questions:
  • What are some of your favorite passages in Scripture and why?
  • Do you spend more time reading in the Old Testament or New Testament?
  • What struggles in reading and understanding do you have in the Old Testament?
  • Do you use any additional resources/books/commentaries to help you understand scripture as you read it? If so what?
  • What are you currently reading in the Bible? What is challenging you in what you’re reading?

In this session we are talking about the “metanarrative” of the Bible. That means the overall story, or the bigger, all-encompassing story of scripture. How would you describe the overall story of scripture?

We primarily focus on stories of Jesus when we give Club talks and plan discipleship discussions. But as followers of Jesus, we need to be reading and challenging ourselves in our understanding of scripture in order to keep growing in our understanding of Jesus.

In preparation for your training meeting, read through the book of Acts and one of the letters of Paul.

ACCOUNTABILITY
  • Do you HAVE a plan of what scripture you are reading?
  • Are you ACTIVELY reading scripture? How often do you read and what are you reading?
  • Do you have a group of people you SHARE what you are learning in scripture with?
  • Is your understanding of who God is GROWING and your love of God’s Word GROWING as you spend time in scripture?
ACTION ITEMS
  • Using scripture passages, write 150-300 words on each of the following questions and send them to your trainer before your next meeting:
  1. How do you explain the metanarrative of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation?
  2. How do you understand what sin is? What scripture passages do you use to explain sin to others?
  3. Why did Jesus have to die on the cross? What does it mean that he died on the cross and rose again? How does that change your life? What scripture passages do you use to understand this/explain to others?
  • Read through Acts and one of Paul’s letters. What new things stand out to you as you read these passages? Make notes and plan to bring those with you to your next training meeting.
